I’m very bipartisan when it comes to animal rescue, and also when hoping for the very best for
our country. As the Democratic primaries continue to leave this country in a political whirlwind,
this week Lucky and I have really started to think politically! Lucky told me she wants to get into
the game, maybe petitioning to be a first dog in Senate, eventually moving into the big Dog Houseon Pennsylvania Ave., I mean White House. I told her she's out of her mind, but since this is the year of firsts, surprises, and the underdog, she thinks she might have a barking chance at becoming the first canine president in history. In the very least Lucky can be an active “bibarkisan” watchdog.
In accordance with our new political prowess and curiosity, Lucky and I attended a fundraiser for Saturday Night Live alum, funnyman Al Franken at Bob Wright's house, Vice Chairman and Executive Officer, of General Electric (parent company of NBC). Franken is running for a Democratic Senate seat in Minnesota and the fundraiser drew some familiar faces from both his political and comedic days. Franken personally expressed his deep sorrow and upset to me about the passing of his eight-year-old best friend and Lab, Herbie, after a battle with cancer (we heard it straight from Al Franken – not through the canine grapevine). Lucky and I were so saddened by the news, and felt that Minnesotans could do a lot worse than having such a compassionate
man represent the great state of Minnesota. At the event, Mike Myers, the “International Man of Mystery”, joyfully quipped about his rescued American Bulldog named George Harrison, I can just imagine the Puppy Love Guru and his dog running through Strawberry Fields Forever together!
I ran into Triumph the Insult Comic Dog's manager and SNL cartoonist Robert Smigel and his adorable wife Michelle, who proudly told me that they have two brand new pups – human twins. Congrats! We bumped into famed tennis player, John McEnroe, who told us he is happy with his new dog and cat, now that his children are finally out of the house
(in a loving way, of course!). Jerry Stiller and his wife Anne Meara mentioned they recently lost their precious kitty and they're torn up about it. Doonesbury cartoonist Gary Trudeau chatted about his two Labs Phoebe and Julie, who didn’t pass the seeing eye dog exam this time (there’s always next time), but life could be a lot worse for these canines, look at who they live with and think about all the laughs around that household!
It seemed like everyone had news on their pets, until I ran into SNL actor Seth Meyers, who said he was pet-less these days, but does want to help the Humane Society by being a celebrity dog walker for Animal Fair's own annual Paws For Style charity event this spring. Spoke to Karesse Grenier, mother of Entourage star and Animal Fair Annual Charity Calendar model, Adrian Grenier, about his beautiful pooch, Honeybee. And just when I thought there wasn’t anymore dog gossip to be had, I referred her to animal trainer to the Broadway dog stars, Bill Berloni (original “Annie”, “Legally Blonde – The Musical”, dog trainer, as well as the dogs in Tom Hanks’ recent movie “Charlie Wilson’s War" to take care of some issues with Honeybee! Guess living with one of the world’s most eligible bachelors is stressful.
Our good deed this week, we have committed to flying down to show our support at the opening of the new, state of the art shelter, McCamey Animal Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sonia Young spearheaded the fundraising effort to open this spectacular new facility. Who knows, maybe Tennessean’s Samuel L. Jackson, Dolly Parton and Justin Timberlake will show up, sing a little number and do a doggy dance.
