This week has seen a lot of headlines, most surrounding Eliot Spitzer's prostitution scandal and resignation. It seems like the media has spoken to everyone and anyone related to the case, but what about Spitzer's dogs (or as journalists are saying, his equals)? Animal Fair had planned to get the exclusive with Spitzer's Bichon Frise, Jesse, and his Terrier, James (note Jesse + James = Jesse James), but now that the story has been blown out of the ballpark, they are MIA Trouble Helmsley-style. Aside from the Spitzer chaos, Lucky and I have been glued to the pet headlines coming out of Tucson, Arizona.
It turns out that an elderly couple in the Tucson area had been housing over 800 dogs (including Chihuahuas, Terriers and Pomeranians) in their triple-wide mobile home. The couple began as breeders but eventually ended up hoarding the dogs leading to a situation so populous and out-of-control that some of the dogs were even giving birth while they were being rescued. Lucky, who can hardly share a space with her mother and feline brother Pasha, was startled by the living conditions and I reminded her why her name was Lucky. Although some of the dogs reportedly had deformities such as missing feet, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona said that the majority of the dogs were in, "Good shape." Lucky and I urge anyone in the area to help out, turn one of those pups into another "Lucky" dog. Find out how you can help by visiting hssaz.org.
This week Lucky took a break from the Hollywood glamour scene and got into the classical music and literary scenes –talk about a sophisticated dog! Lucky's the only dog I know that would be seen at Lincoln Center time and time again, this time for the San Francisco Symphony's documentary Keeping Score based on Beethoven's Eroica Symphon. While there, Lucky chatted with Joy Luck Club best-selling author Amy Tan, a huge fan of the symphony, who was mourning the death of her Yorkshire Terrier, Bubba. The dog loving, Mahjong-playing author did tell Lucky about the new addition to her family, another yet-to-be-named Yorkshire to join Tan's other pooch, Lilli. Lucky was quick to think on her four feet and suggested doing a second book (and HOPEFULLY subsequent major motion picture) called The Joy Lucky Club. Lucky also schmoozed with photographer, author and widow of the late, great Kurt Vonnegut, Jill Krementz. Also there was "It's My Party" singer Leslie Gore who was just gushing about her return to music and her equally musical Cocker Spaniel, Little Billie, named after Billie Holiday. Lucky has always been a fan of Gore's music, constantly threatening that if she doesn't get her way she will "cry if I want to."
