This week Lucky and I must commend humanitarian and heart warmer Oprah Winfrey for her outstanding and eye-opening look at the controversy surrounding puppy mills on Friday’s Oprah Winfrey Show. Puppy mills are always a sensitive subject with Lucky, as a rescued Maltese she’s inclined to loathe puppy mills with the philosophy: “Why pay so much for something when you can get the same love from an animal in jeopardy… for free!?” Fortunately for Lucky, I got her before she went into the system – the big dog house – and we both equally enjoyed former View co-host and now full time telejournalist, Lisa Ling on the show as she went in depth with the shocking look at how those adorable puppies are actually bred and raised. Ling’s coverage is right up there with the in-depth looks at freegans, Polygamists and child labor, showing just how crucial the issue is today. The show was an homage of sorts paying respect to Winfrey’s thirteen year old (91 dog years) Cocker Spaniel, Gracie, who passed away recently of kidney failure. The show also included tips on how to adopt adorable pups like Lucky Diamond and information on pet control and euthanasia. Our deepest respects go out to Winfrey, may Gracie rest in piece. We launched Animal Fair in 1999 to support fairness to animals after seeing the horrific shelter system and so many homeless animals being killed.
It’s been a slow week back in New York. Lucky and I caught up with our very first Animal Fair cover girl Renee Zellweger while enjoying lunch at Michael's restaurant. She says she’s not quite ready for a dog after her Golden, Dylan’s passing, but is enjoying time with her cat. Zellweger has teamed up with heartthrob George Clooney and Office cutie John Krasinski in the new film, Leatherheads. Leatherheads is a romantic comedy with sports, a perfect date movie, and it has pets too! Rocky, a beautiful Bull Dog plays the mascot in the film for the Duluth Bull Dogs and Zellweger just fell in love with him. I wonder if there’s any city that has a Maltese as a mascot, maybe I can book Lucky the job. Then again she’s content being the face for Animal Fair… for now.
While shopping together this week Lucky and I had the pleasure of running into fan favorite and NBC's hit show Project Runway winner Christian Siriano. Siriano has been called the next Marc Jacobs and he gave us a little designer gossip of his own – he’s ready to adopt. That’s right, right now we’re working on helping him adopt a Pomeranian (hopefully in time for Paws For Style, which he will definitely wants be a part of)! I’m sure that dog’s going to be the best dressed dog out there. Lucky and I can’t wait to see what Siriano will name the new addition to his family, whatever name it may be, it’s bound to be “fierce”!
