This week Lucky and I hopped over to the 11th Annual ASPCA Bergh Ball, this year called Ain’t Nothing But A Pound Dog. All night we were looking for an Elvis impersonator, but we had no luck, however, we were happy to be there to help support the oldest established humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Lucky and I ran into Dylan Lauren, daughter of Ralph Lauren and owner esteemed mega sweet stores, Dylan’s Candy Bar. Lauren told us that she doesn’t have a dog right now, but she’s a “rabbit collector.” She’s also in the process of getting a pet Pot-Bellied Pig and hopes to start her own animal charity. I wonder if she would walk her Pot Bellied Pig in Manhattan… are pigs allowed in dog parks? Hopefully she’ll keep the pig away from the candy store, after all, candy’s never good for a pot-belly!
Designer Nicole Miller told us about her Rhodesian Ridgeback, chosen specifically because the dog’s coat matched her hairstyle exactly. Isaac Mizrahi also talked about the similarities between him and his Boarder Collie/ Golden Retriever Mix, Harry. Mizrahi told us that Harry is “less like a pet and more like a soul mate or alter ego… if Harry’s not happy, then Issac’s not happy!” I guess Lucky and I have a lot in common, but sometimes I think Lucky is spoiled and lazy and I work too hard to be compared to her. But at the end of the day, as I always say, we are two strong women. Lucky and I also chatted with actress Lake Bell, designer Catherine Malandrino, Miss Universe Riyo Mori (who has a Golden, a Pekinese and a Japanese cat), and Miss USA Crystle Stewart, who is currently dogless but if she had to choose a pup, she would pick a Chihuahua. Later that week Lucky mustered up all her courage and attended the Fourth Race for Survival For Cheetah Outreach with me, where there were actual (intimidating) Cheetah Ambassadors. Lucky declined taking a photo, because she was too scared to come within 100 feet of the giant cats, but she said it was a learning experience. Cheetah Outreach is an organization that started in South Africa that’s dedicated to preserving the declining Cheetah population. Ironically enough their motto is “See it, Sense it, Save it” which is exactly what Lucky did with the big cats. She saw the Cheetah, she sensed she was in danger and she wanted to leave to save herself. For more information check out (RaceForSurvival.com).
Lucky and I also found some time to get spiritual this week attending the first in the hopes for many concerts dedicated to sacred music. There for the concert was virtuoso Phillip Glass and soulstress Roberta Flack, who sang in Bengali, an East Indian language. Flack did not sing her classic hit Killing Me Softly which is a shame because Lucky kills me more than softly because she is the funniest dog I know. What other dog in Manhattan supports sacred music? The night was part of a tribute to fellow songwriter and spiritual healer, Sri Chinmoy. Also getting spiritual this week is Martha Stewart who has written some kind words about the recent death of her Chow, Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow. Stewert say the pup was "elegant and kind and reserved and charming up until the very last moment. He was the only pet [she] ever had, with the exception of Blue Maximilian Chow Chow Chow, who was never disobedient, and never, ever, required [her] to raise [her] voice." Our best wishes go out to Ms. Stewart for the loss of her dog. Dog Bless.
