Keep your Pets Warm this Winter

Disclaimer - Lucky’s political standing does not necessarily equate for Wendy, Petsmart or Animal Fair Media, Inc. political standing …
Another week and now signs of snow! It's always hard during the winter when you have a white dog, but then again, snow in New York doesn't stay white for very long. This week Lucky and I attended the 13th Annual ARTWALK NY, an art auction benefiting the Coalition for the Homeless (homeless people, not pets). This is the very organization that inspired me to start Animal Fair, by working with homeless people, where I met the late Peter Jennings on the van delivering food to the homeless,  whose wife Kayce Freed Jennings was a co-chair of the benefit. By helping homeless people I saw homeless animals as confidants to homeless people and realized I could contribute by helping homeless animals. Soon after I adopted Pasha from the Animal Care and Control of New York then of course Pasha needed a friend and I adopted Lucky, founding the magazine in 1998. Almost ten years later I continue to support both homeless people and homeless pets with an open heart. Lucky and I, Lucky knowing she is a Pretty Woman was so excited to meet Richard Gere and of course his beautiful wife Carey Lowell (both co-chairs of the coalition).  By the time we were introduced to Richard Gere and the cameras went off I forgot to take Lucky out of the bag!!! I thought she would never forgive me but to be honest after a few treats when we got home all was forgotten. At least I got a picture with the American Gigolo himself. The master of ceremonies for the event was funny man Richard Kind (an old friend of Lucky's) and artists who donated work for the auction included Chris Dorland, Yoko Ono, Jeff Koons (Lucky's personal favorite because it was a sculpture of various animals Stacked, including a dog… of course), and artist honoree of the evening, Donald Baechler. We also saw 3rd Rock’s Alec Baldwin, looking very serious, but there to support the coalition. At the end of the week Lucky and I were off to Greenwich, Connecticut for a very special and intimate fundraiser for Hilary Clinton at the home of Ron Howard.  Ron’s seven dogs were in the barn so Lucky was the as usual the token dog at the event.  While Hilary wasn't there, former President Bill Clinton was as well as M. Night Shyamalan and New York Congressman Jerry Nadler. Nadler, who is allergic to cats, told me that his wife had to choose between him and the cat. With Pasha in mind, I told him "I would have chosen the cat!" Lucky had a real agenda at this fundraiser, sporting her Hillary Clinton '08 button, hoping to get more dogs heard in the voting process. In all likelihood, that won't happen, but if dogs could vote, Lucky would vote for Clinton, and all her canine friends would too. Lucky was proud to get her picture taken with the former President. Mr. Clinton said Lucky was the first dog he's taken a picture with besides his own... quite the honor!  So as these winter months come with full force, let me straighten one thing out: if you see Lucky Diamond out and about with a little doggy sweater on, know that it's not because we're promoting animal ensembles, it's because little Lucky is cold. Keep your pets warm this winter!
